About Us

The Northwest Louisiana Pro Bono Project was established in 1986, to serve the legal needs of indigent and low-income residents of Caddo Parish, through the volunteer efforts of local attorneys. In 2004, the Project expanded to serve residents of the Bossier Parish as well. The Project handles only civil, non-fee generating cases. Client eligibility is based on residency and income guidelines, with priority given to the elderly, and to veterans of the armed services.

The most important goal of the Northwest Louisiana Pro Bono Project, and the basic reason for its existence, is to provide quality legal services to the poor and disadvantaged who would not otherwise receive such services. Hundreds of people contact us each year for help with serious legal matters which affect their health, safety, shelter or income. In addition to one-on-one pro bono attorney referrals, the Project also administers, or participates in the following programs:

H.E.L.P. Office Hours (in partnership with Centerpoint)
Legal consultation and assistance for shelter residents and Centerpoint clients on the second Wednesday of each month, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. We also provide assistance for homeless clients to obtain birth cards and State photo ID cards.

Wills Clinic
Information, consultation and free preparation of simple wills for qualifying clients, by local volunteer attorneys. Pre-registration is required, and may be done over the phone by calling the Pro Bono Project at 221-2205.

103 Divorce Clinic
Article 103 of the Louisiana Civil Code provides for a quick judgment of divorce in cases where the spouses have no community property, no minor children, and have already been separated for at least 180 days (six months) before the petition for divorce is to be filed. If you meet those conditions, and our income and residency guidelines, you may be eligible to get your divorce through the Pro Bono Project's 103 Divorce Clinic, which is held several times a year. Clients pay only the court filing fee.

Homeless Connect (in partnership with H.O.P.E. For The Homeless)
Volunteer attorneys provide assistance to homeless clients each year at Homeless Connect (formerly called "Operation Stand Down"), ensuring that clients who need replacement birth cards and State IDs can get them. Having valid ID is typically a requirement for persons needing to get into overnight shelters and to receive free meals.

Cancer Hospice Wills Program (in partnership with Grace Hospice)
Volunteer attorneys travel to Grace Hospice to meet with low-income terminally-ill patients regarding their final bequests, and prepare their wills free of charge.

Según la Ley (in partnership with Kings Highway Christian Church)
The Pro Bono Project's Spanish outreach program offers a free legal clinic for low-income Spanish-speaking clients.

Become A Pro Bono Project Volunteer Attorney

Legal aid programs across the country have received serious budget cuts in recent years, and as a result are unable to serve the numbers of needy clients they previously served. In fact, the Northwest Louisiana Pro Bono Project has recently been forced temporarily to stop accepting new clients, because of a backlog of existing clients who are waiting for referral to an available pro bono volunteer attorney.

Now more than ever, there's a pressing need for individual volunteer attorneys and law firm pro bono involvement in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Without volunteer attorneys, there is no equal access to justice for the many low-income persons in our community who cannot afford legal consultation or representation.

If you are a licensed attorney admitted to practice before the courts of Caddo and Bossier Parishes, and you are not already a Northwest Louisiana Pro Bono Project volunteer, please consider becoming one today.
